Max Adolph Otto Siegfried Schmeling (born 28 September 1905 in Klein Luckow, Germany, February 2, 2005 in Wenzendorf) was a German heavyweight boxer and between 1930 and 1932 heavyweight boxing champion. A comeback as champion succeeded, despite the victory 1936 against Joe Louis, in the decisive second fight of 1938 no more. It is still regarded as one of Germany's most popular athletes.



On 2 February 2005, Max Schmeling died at the age of 99 years of a severe cold in his place of Hollenstedt. The official mourning ceremony took place on 1 March 2005 in the Hamburg "Michel" (St. Michaelis Church). He found his last retirement in the cemetery Hollenstedt next to his wife Anny Ondra.
