Description
John Winston Lennon, MBE (later John Winston Ono Lennon) was a British musician, composer, author, film actor and peace activist. He became famous worldwide as a co-founder, singer and guitarist of the British rock band The Beatles, for whom he wrote - alongside Paul McCartney - the most songs. The composer partnership Lennon / McCartney is one of the most famous and successful in the history of pop music.
During the dissolution phase of the Beatles, Lennon, together with his second wife, Yoko Ono, organized a number of public-minded happenings (see Fluxus) for world peace and turned to artistically new areas from the end of the 1960s. After the separation of the Beatles, Lennon started a successful solo career with albums such as John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band (1970) and Imagine (1971).
Lennon was shot dead in 1980 by the mentally confused, deeply religious assassin Mark David Chapman in New York.
John Lennon died at the age of 40 and was cremated. His ashes were scattered in Central Park, now known as Strawberry Fields.
