Johannes Rau (German pronunciation: [joˈhanəs ˈʁaʊ]; 16 January 1931 – 27 January 2006) was a German politician of the SPD. He was President of Germany from 1 July 1999 until 30 June 2004, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 20 September 1978 to 9 June 1998 and President of the Bundesrat from 1982-83.

Previously, he served as a municipal, state and federal politician to the SPD. From 1969 to 1970 he was Lord Mayor of the city of Wuppertal. From 1977 to 1998 he was the country's chairman of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia, and from 1978 to 1998 he was the sixth minister-president of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with which he had been holding these two offices longer than anyone else. He was a chancellor candidate for the SPD in the 1987 Bundestag elections. In 1993, after the resignation of Björn Engholm, he presided over the presidency of the SPD federal party.

Johannes Rau died in Berlin on January 27, 2006, around 8:30 am in the circle of his family. The funeral took place on 7th February following a mourning ceremony at the Dorotheenstädtisches Friedhof in Berlin in the closest family and friends circle.
