James Bond (born January 4, 1900 in Philadelphia, died February 14, 1989) was an American ornithologist whose name inspired author Ian Fleming to name James Bond, his secret character.

Ian Fleming, who was an avid bird watcher when he lived in Jamaica, knew Bonds's book and chose the name of his author for the protagonist of his Casino Royale history, because the name appeared to him "as ordinary as possible." Fleming wrote Bond's wife, "It struck me that this short, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and especially masculine name was exactly what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born." [11] The short story For Your Eyes Only, a precise description of the appearance and courtship behavior of the doctor humming-bird (Trochilus polytmus).

In the twentieth film of the James Bond series, the secret agent James Bond is an ornithologist in Cuba and has the book of the real James Bond.

Bond died in the Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia at age 89. He is interred in the church yard at Church of the Messiah in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.
