Description
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr., was a British comedian, an actor , Director, screenwriter, editor, composer and filmproducer.
Chaplin is one of the most influential comedians of the 20th century in film history. His most famous role is the "Tramp". The figure he invented with a double-necked mustache (also called Chaplinbart), oversized trousers and shoes, a tight jacket, a bamboo stick in his hand, and a melon on his head, with the manners and the dignity of a gentleman, became a film icon. Characteristic of his films was the close connection between slapstick comedy and serious to tragic elements. The American Film Institute chose Chaplin as # 10 of the greatest American film legends.
By October 1977, Chaplin's health had declined to the point that he needed constant care. In the early morning of 25 December 1977, Chaplin died at home after suffering a stroke in his sleep. He was 88 years old. The funeral, on 27 December, was a small and private Anglican ceremony, according to his wishes. Chaplin was interred in the Corsier-sur-Vevey cemetery.
