Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell (born May 18, 1872 at Trellech, Monmouthshire, Wales, February 2, 1970 in Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd, Wales) was a British philosopher, mathematician, and logician. He taught at, among others, Trinity College, Cambridge University, London School of Economics, Harvard University, and Peking University, and was a member of the Cambridge Apostles. In 1950 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Russell died of influenza on 2 February 1970 at his home in Penrhyndeudraeth. His body was cremated in Colwyn Bay on 5 February 1970. In accordance with his will, there was no religious ceremony; his ashes were scattered over the Welsh mountains later that year.
